Everyone at work was flipping out with excitement about these. Bluetooth earbuds have been around for ages but the second apple joins in...

Not to mention, that at least for me, the updated corded ones that came with the phones didn’t even stay in my ear. I can only imagine how shit these would be.

I’ve been using Apple stuff for ages, and that’s goddammed funny.

Ugh bluetooth and music never belong together, always sounds like crap. Similar to when you record music playing on the radio with the speakerphone on your cell phone, it’s just bad! Plus there is almost no standard when it comes to bluetooth drivers so device incompatibility runs rampant. #AUXINFORLIFE

With this one single stroke Apple raised the stock in aftermarket ear buds and head phones around the world.

USB digital input for life. Aux in in a car usually gives the signal a chance to pick up a bit of noise before it gets to the amplifier. Also having the head unit be able to change songs is nice.

The only issue with USB input is again, driver support. I have never had an Android phone work correctly via USB. Plus the file managers are always terrible and dont read the tracks correctly (all of my music is in .OGG or FLAC file format because MP3 sucks). Ideally I wish I could just use the music player on my phone and output digitally over USB just the audio. Then it would seamlessly work with all Apps too without the head unit needing to be programmed for it. I dont even run a head unit (my phone is the head unit) but either way, the speakers are routed eventually via Analog wire, so there will be signal loss that way. Ideally, digital input, to digital amp, to digital speaker connection is the way to go but that isnt very popular/practical for a car environment.

in your scenario, yeah, aux in works better for android etc. One point though, there is a HUGE difference between the analog signal wire going from the source to the amp, and the wire going from the amp to the speakers. Induced noise between a power amp and a low impedance load like speakers is super negligible versus noise induced into a signal line between a source and a high impedance input on an amp. Also there is no such thing as a digital speaker connection....

Yes, I went a little overboard with the digital things haha. And Yeah in the case of signal loss in the speaker wire, higher gauge wire really mitigates that. I am running 14 gauge speaker wire in pretty short lengths so that end of things is solved. The place for signal loss is the RCA input to the amp. I am using a 3.5mm to RCA connection which is another source of loss. Some sort of Toslink or whatever its called between the audio source and the amp would be the perfect solution. Only problem if I was using USB to a headunit, would be the headunit still outputting over RCA to the amp. But I suppose it could be better that way depending on the cable used there.

I used to see bluetooth headphones in the junk bin at Fry’s Electronics.

While I generally tend to agree, Bose QC35s are pretty magical.

I have an irrational hate for anything Bose (stands for Buy Other Sound Equipment). But yeah, I imagine those sound pretty good, reviews seem to praise those. For the price though, i could imagine affording a nice wired set and a headphone amp to truly blow my mind.

between the headunit and the amp, it’s not really the gauge of wire you use, but the shielding of the wire. What do you mean by signal loss in your setup? Introduction of noise, amplitude reduction, or bad SNR in general. I do a lot of instrumentation and analog signal stuff at work, so I am curious.

I loathe everything except for their portable speakers (soundlink mini) and headphones (QC35s). Every car with Bose speakers I’ve ridden in/drove (my S600 included) has been either bad or abhorrently bad in terms of sound quality.

Well I cant tell if I am experiencing any signal loss (really the top being down and wind causes a lot more SQ issues than anything else lol). I am just saying that in theory, I figured the RCA to 3.5mm adapter would have some poor shielding and such to cause some sort of problem. Thankfully this setup doesnt have any noise (unless I plug my phone into the cig lighter outlet) but I have had previous car setups with ridiculous ground loops and signal issues.

Haha we are definitely on the same page then! I have found that some Bose headphones actually do sound pretty good (unlike Beats, those are just bad) but I can’t get over the price. I just always like to compare my Sennheisers that I picked up for less than $100 and find them hard to beat in terms of balanced sound reproduction. It always bothers me when headphones are just really boomy or need a lot of EQ to make them sound right.

I wonder how much bluetooth sound really degrades over distance? The real advantage I could see is connecting to my desktop from a further distance across the room than a cable would be practical. But I wonder if signal loss would get extremely bad in that case. I have hooked up a 30 foot extension cable to my headphones before for that purpose lol.

Lol nice. Sound degradation isn’t too bad on my soundlink so, I doubt it’d be bad on QC35s
